The “Essentials” Box

You must pack a “last pack” or “essentials box” when moving.” This box should either travel with you if you are travelling by vehicle or be the last thing on the moving truck if you are flying. This way, it will be the first thing off the truck. It should also be clearly labelled so that there is no confusion about what is inside and where it ends up. Keep in mind. This box will contain all the essential items you need to get you through about 24 hours in your new home—enough time to get settled in to begin unpacking other things.

Toilet Paper – No explanation needed. No one wants to be running around cutting open boxes looking for toilet paper in an emergency.

Clothes – A new change of clothes is always good to have on hand. Moving in and unpacking can be hard work. If you do not have access to a shower right away, you at least want a fresh set of clothing.

Toiletries – All of the essentials; soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, brush or comb, razor and shaving cream.

Shower Curtain – Nothing can be more relaxing than a hot shower after a day of moving and unpacking.

Towels – How will you dry off after your shower?

Small First Aid Kit – There is no need to pack a survival kit. Still, you should have some essentials like bandages, antibiotic ointment, alcohol wipes, an instant cold pack, and any medications you are currently taking.

Knife – For all those boxes you need to get into!

Cleaning Supplies – Hopefully, you are moving into a clean home; however, it is always good to have backup supplies to clean in the cupboards or other tight areas as they are often missed.

Plates/Cutlery/Cups – Enough to cover all the members of your family for a day or two.

Snacks – Yes, most of you will be ordering in, but it is good to have snacks and drinks on hand during the moving and unpacking process to keep the energy up. DO NOT FORGET THE INSTANT COFFEE.

Furniture Parts/Screws & Bolts – We highly recommend putting all screws, bolts and parts from furniture taken apart in this box. We like to call this the “set up box “ in the moving industry.” As you unpack and clear away boxes, you may want to begin setting up furniture. It is practical and efficient to put all parts in individual zip lock bags, labelled, and in the setup carton.

iPod/Music – Tunes will keep morale up while moving and unpacking.
